Native Rebel Recordings Chelsea Carmichael saxophonist

Chelsea Carmichael

Saxophonist, composer and arranger Chelsea Carmichael is an understated innovator and educator, quietly adding her own contribution to the iteration of jazz that has evolved on these islands. She’s a warm and hypnotic player, who brings subtle and considered improvisation to everything she does.

She’s already been part of a Mercury-nominated band – she played on SEED Ensemble’s 2019 Driftglass – and currently plays with Theon Cross, the Neue Grafik Ensemble and the hyper-popular Outlook Orchestra who play for huge audiences at major venues and festivals. She also writes and arranges for her own Chelsea Carmichael Ensemble.

Kwake Bass drummer, producer, musical director

Kwake Bass

Kwake is Musical Director for Sampha and Kae Tempest. Back in 2006 he turned his beat-making into live drums for Speakers Corner Quartet, the house band at the much-missed Brixton open mic night of the same name. He started playing drums aged five, was playing sessions with his musician dad in his early teens and switched live drums for beat making aged 14. He got back behind the drum kit when he was 21 and has become the player of choice for travelling US heavyweights, playing with MF Doom, The Roots and Joey Bada$$ as well as UK major players Lianne La Havas and Mica Levi.

Confucius MC

Confucius MC has been embedded in UK hip hop since the early 2000s and spent over a decade as a music educator in a primary school,  running the after-school Rap Club, bringing artists like Kwake’s Speakers Corner Quartet to meet the children. The club included kids who became enigmatic rapper Jesse James Solomon and early drill pioneer Loski. Con was the support of choice for Mos Def, and this year he was touring with UK hip hop stalwart Jehst.

About

Native Rebel Recordings

Native Rebel is a new label from multi-reed player and cultural instigator Shabaka Hutchings. It is a platform and outlet for artists to make albums in collaboration with the musician and composer behind Sons of Kemet, The Comet Is Coming and Shabaka and the Ancestors, whether he’s writing songs, producing, or directing the process.

The label offers a collaborative and flexible infrastructure for emerging creative artists using a newly-hatched method: gather the musicians together to record the album in three days at RAK, without pre-rehearsal, and to consider the rehearsals part of the recording.
